Legal Requirements Before You Can Drive

The minimum age you are allowed to drive on the public roads is 17, unless you are a disabled person in receipt of mobility allowance in which case the minimum age is 16.

Until you pass your practical test you are not allowed to drive on your own. Before you start to drive or apply to take your theory test, you must obtain a provisional licence. You must not drive until you have obtained this licence and signed it in ink.

Before you can drive you must also ensure you meet the required eyesight standard. You must be able to read in good daylight, with glasses or contact lenses if you wear them, a motor vehicle number plate:

  • from a distance of 20.5 metres (about 67 feet)
  • with letters 79.4 mm (3.1 inches high)
