A two-tier parking penalty structure was introduced on 1 July 2007. This means that less serious parking offences receive an £80 penalty whereas more serious contraventions cost £120. A 50% reduction applies if the ticket is paid within 14 days.
The higher rate £120 fines include:
parking at bus stops
on pedestrian crossings
in safety zones outside schools
moving traffic offences, such as driving in a bus lane
Less serious offences that attract a lower fine of £80 include:
overstaying in a pay and display bay
not parking within the parking bay markings
re-parking in a short-stay bay within one hour of leaving
Parking in a residents bay without a permit or visitors voucher attracts a £120 fine, but Islington parking attendants leave an official notice letting drivers know that if they are visiting a resident and can provide proof, the fine will be reduced to £80.
Local Authorities in London are empowered to enforce against illegally parked vehicles following the decriminalisation of parking offences under the Road Traffic Act 1991.
Our contractor National Car Parks (NCP) provides the parking attendants and removal operatives who carry out our parking enforcement services.
Parking attendants undergo rigorous training before starting on street duties. Our contract monitoring teams closely monitor and regulate their performance.
Parking enforcement is conducted firmly and fairly in all instances of illegal parking.
If you let us know your concerns about illegal parking, we will aim to respond and take enforcement action, where possible.
For more information contact parking services.
If you see a parked vehicle which is causing an obstruction or is parked somewhere it shouldn't be, you can call our Enforcement Hotline. They will advise whether the vehicle appears to be parked in contravention and will send out an enforcement unit accordingly.
The Enforcement Hotline number is 020 7527 7624.
Please note: this only refers to vehicles parked on the public highway as we are unable to enforce against vehicles on private land or housing estates. If you want to report an illegally parked vehicle on a housing estate, please call Homes for Islington's parking contractor on 0870 240 4139.
