London Overground Works

One of the capital’s most exciting transport projects is the multi-million pound upgrade of the London Overground network, which is due for completion in 2011. With new connections to north and east London, faster, longer trains and more frequent services, many of the benefits will be felt right here in Islington.

By 2011, passengers will benefit from increased services with eight trains per hour at peak times between Camden Road and Stratford, and eight trains per hour on the new East London Line service that will terminate at Highbury & Islington Station.

The London Overground network between Gospel Oak and Stratford reopened on 1 June 2010 after a three month closure to carry out construction works along the line.  During this period Network Rail renewed the tracks, installed overhead lines and signal cables and replaced the Victorian sewer.  Refurbishment works have also been carried out at Caledonian Road & Barnsbury, Highbury & Islington and Canonbury Stations to support the new improved service and provide lift access to platforms.

Overview of London Overground Project

Work to improve the London Overground network across London started in February 2009.

In Islington:

  • The Richmond to Stratford line will benefit from increased services with eight trains per hour at peak times between Camden Road and Stratford in 2011. Passengers will also benefit from new and longer trains being introduced on the line.

In order to carry out works on the line, weekend closures are taking place (mainly on Sundays)

  • On the Gospel Oak to Barking line, work started in February 2009, and services will also be increased to four trains per hour all day, every day in 2010.

To carry out work on the Gospel Oak to Barking line, weekend closures of the line are taking place until 2011. New diesel trains are due to start coming into service by late 2010, offering more onboard capacity to passengers.

Rail replacement services are provided when the lines are closed. Details of this can be found on Transport for London’s website.

Work to London Overground Stations

Work to improve London Overground stations began in April 2009.

  • Caledonian Road and Barnsbury Station has been remodelled as a single island platform. A new footbridge will be constructed, complete with lifts.
  • At Highbury and Islington Station, new platforms have been constructed on the north side which will serve London Overground. The East London Line will use the existing platforms. The concourse at this station has been enlarged and lift access provided to London Overground and East London Line platforms.
  • Canonbury Station has been remodelled as a four platform interchange between the East London Line and London Overground. Lift access will be provided to these platforms.
  • Works to refurbish redundant sections of platform at Crouch Hill Station will be carried out.
  • Work to improve Dalston Kingsland Station in Hackney has been carried out. This includes the reconstruction of Boleyn Road bridge, which sits on the borough boundary.
