London Overground Works

North London Line upgrade and East London Line extension

From 2011, Islington will benefit from improved rail services on the North London Line, part of the London Overground network. The borough will also benefit from a direct rail connection to South East London, when the East London Line is extended to Highbury and Islington Station.

North London Line
Transport for London and Network Rail are making improvements to the London Overground network, to run a more reliable and efficient passenger train service ahead of the Olympic games. By 2011, Islington residents and businesses will benefit from:

  • eight trains per hour in each direction (twice as many as in 2008)
  • new trains
  • longer trains (extension from three to four cars)
  • more reliable rail services
  • refurbished stations with CCTV, improved shelters and reliable, real-time information

East London Line
From February 2011, the East London Line will be running eight trains an hour in each direction between Highbury and Islington station, and South East London. This will include direct connections to New Cross, Crystal Palace and West Croydon. Once complete, the extended East London line will become part of the London Overground network.

Temporary line closures

Transport for London and Network Rail will be carrying out works to the tracks and signalling along both lines until the lines open in 2011. To carry out these works safely, sections of the line will need to be closed temporarily.
