Connect2 - Improving Walking and Cycling Routes

Islington Connect2 Route

Map of the new route

Islington Council has won £600,000 to spend on walking and cycling improvements on a new route connecting Finsbury Park to Highbury Corner.

Thanks to everyone who voted for Sustrans' Connect2 and for your help in winning the £50 million Lottery Giveaway, the largest ever publicly-decided award.

Update

In June 2009 Islington Council marked the opening of the long awaited Gillespie Park extension with a celebratory ribbon cutting ceremony. The extension route will enable people to access the nature reserve from the gate on Seven Sisters Road opposite Finsbury Park Station. This is the first opening event for the Islington Connect2 Route and will open an off road alternative for pedestrians and cyclists travelling north south in the borough.

Background

The Islington Connect2 Route is one of 79 schemes UK-wide in the Connect2 project, which aims to encourage people to travel in ways that benefit their health and the environment, as well as creating a sense of community pride. In Islington, this represents a great opportunity for the local people of Highbury and Finsbury Park including children, students and the many thousands of visitors to the new Arsenal Stadium.
