Car Free Day 19 Sept 2009

Would you like to see Liverpool road transformed into a grassy oasis where you can stretch out, relax, listen to live music and enjoy a street party atmosphere in a car free environment?

Then come and join our celebration of car free day on Saturday 19 September from 12 noon until 5pm. It’s all happening on Liverpool Road, between Tolpuddle and Upper Street at the back of the N1 centre.

As well as music and street entertainment there will also be friendly experts on hand to provide advice on cycling, walking, air quality and living in the borough car free. Bring your family and friends along to enjoy a green Liverpool Road for the day.

This event ties in with European Mobility week which runs from Sept 16 to 22. Islington will be joining a number of other London boroughs who will also be hosting car free fun activities over the week. This year climate change has been chosen as the common EMW theme and the Energy doctor will be there on the day offering advice and tips on how to reduce energy usage and bills in the home.

Islington Council supports green travel. Green travel is any form of transport that causes less damage to the environment and the community than driving.

Walking, cycling and public transport are the main forms of green travel. Shortening and combining car trips, tuning up your car, or driving a car that runs on cleaner fuel than conventional petrol or diesel, are also green alternatives.

For more details of specific green travel topics in the borough, click on the links under the main navigation list on the left side of this page. You can also click on the main Transport and Streets link to view information about walking, buses, tubes, trains and accessible transport.

You can also select the National Rail and Transport for London links on the right, under Useful Websites. Transport for London is the government's comprehensive website covering all public transport information for the capital. It includes up-to-the-minute updates on disruptions to services, a journey planner, Oyster card and ticket details, and more.

Did You Know?

  • Riding a bicycle uses less energy than a car uses to power its headlights.
  • Every minute spent walking can extend your life on average by two minutes.
  • Car drivers breath up to three times as much traffic fumes due to their low seat position.
