Riding safely in London can be fun and occasionally, hazardous, however consider these top tips next time you are on your bike to ride more safely:
Ride approximately one metre from the kerbside or parked car. This increases your visibility and makes you more visible. It also reduces the chance of a collision with a vehicle door being opened.
Look behind before you make any kind of manoeuvre. It indicates to a driver that you might be about to change direction and it also allows you make a confident decision on when to go.
Look and signal in advance of any turn or major lane change to let other road users know your intentions.
Do not pass large vehicles such as buses or lorries on the left hand side. They cut the corner when they turn and their visibility is not always good due to their high driving position.
Position yourself in the centre of the correct lane when using filter lanes at traffic lights. This helps drivers see you and indicates your intentions.
Do not cycle on the pavement. Not only is it illegal but also it can be dangerous and intimidating for pedestrians. If you don’t feel confident cycling on the road then contact us to sign up for free cycle training.
Stop at red lights. You are in charge of a vehicle on the road and should abide by The Highway Code. It is for the safety of you and everyone around you.
Give way to pedestrians that are crossing or waiting to cross on a zebra crossing. They have right of way.
Use front and rear lights when cycling at night, you are required to do so by the law but more importantly it allows other road users to see you clearly.
Install a bell on your bike; it enables you to warn other road users of your presence
