Cycle Schemes

Cycle Schemes

Encouraging and making cycling safer is an important priority for Islington Council.

These pages provide information on cycle routes and cycle specific schemes and Local Cycle Routes.

Other projects that impact on cycling are not covered in this section but are discussed as part of the specific project that they fall under.

Cycle parking

Islington Council has in the past years invested considerably in cycle parking both on and off the public highway. Due to considerable budget pressures it is unclear whether further funding will be made available specifically for cycle parking however Islington will consider cycle parking as part of all highways schemes.

To request cycle parking in your area, please contact us using the details at the bottom of this page.

London Cycle Hire

Islington worked with Transport for London (TfL) to deliver the London Cycle Hire scheme for Islington in 2010. There are 30 docking stations in the south of the borough with 725 docking points available.

The first phase of the scheme has provided facilities in an area approximately equivalent to the Zone 1 travel area. In November 2009, TfL announced that they will expand the cycle hire scheme in 2012. The area will be expanding eastwards to areas like, Bethnal Green, Bow, Canary Wharf, Mile End and Poplar. Altogether 2,000 more cycles and 4,200 extra docking points will be installed across the existing and new Barclays Cycle Hire area. Islington Council is working with TfL to identify docking stations to be delivered as part of the 2012 scheme expansion.

London Cycle Network (LCN)

The LCN has over the past years had significant investment. Although this is now drastically reduced Islington intends to maintain the LCN routes throughout the borough.

If you require more information on the LCN+, route numbers, route planners, destinations and so forth, please visit London Cycle Network under useful websites.
