Search Tips

There are a number of ways to locate web pages or documents on the London Borough of Islington website. The five main options are:

Simple Search

There is a search box at the top right hand corner of every page of the site. Enter one or more words to search for into the box and click the 'Go' button. The search will find pages containing as many of the words as possible. If you want to search for an exact phrase, place the phrase inside speech marks, e.g. "registering to vote". Alternatively, use Advanced Search.

Refining your search

If the search does not return any results, or any of your words were incorrectly spelt, an alternative search query may be suggested. Click on the alternative phrase or spelling to run a new search.

Council services that match your search terms will be presented in list form. To narrow down the search results further, click on the service most relevant to the page or document you are looking for. The search, and all subsequent refinements, will be carried out on pages relating to the council service selected. To change the service being searched, or to run an unrestricted search across all council services, click on the 'Change Service' link.

Search Results

Documents identified as relevant to your search words are displayed in order of relevance - the result at the top of the list being the most relevant. Results are displayed 10 to a page.

If there are more than 10 results, you may move between pages using the 'Next' and 'Previous' page buttons.

A summary of the content is displayed below the title of each result, along with the 'location' of the file, the date it was last 'updated' and its percentage 'match' to your search words.

To view the actual page or document, click on the title.

Stemming

The search engine may automatically shorten your search terms to help improve results. When this happens the words shown in the 'match' section of the results are not identical to those entered.

Advanced Search

If you are having problems locating a page or document, you can try the Advanced Search. The link to this can be found in the top right hand corner of each page (next to the simple search form) and also on the search results page.

Use one or more of the 4 fields to narrow down your search. Use:

  • 'With all these words' to search for pages and documents containing all the words entered. (Boolean AND)
  • 'With any of these words' to search for pages and documents containing one or more of the words entered. (Boolean OR)
  • 'With this exact phrase' to search for pages and documents containing words in a specific order.
  • 'Without these words' to search for pages and documents that do not contain certain words. (Boolean NOT)
N.B. 'Without these words' can only be used in conjunction with the 'Any' or 'All' search fields.

To limit your search to one of the council service categories click on the 'Select category' link and select the required council service(s) from the popup window.

To search for particular file types only, select the relevant file types from the list box. To select multiple file types, hold down the 'Ctrl' key.

To perform the search, click on the 'Go' button. Advanced Search results are displayed in the same manner as the Simple Search described above. Clicking 'Refine Advanced Search' will allow you to edit your search criteria further.
