Islington Streets - Assisting Pedestrians and Shoppers

Islington Streets - Assisting Pedestrians and Shoppers

The policy - Islington Streets – Assisting Pedestrians and Shoppers aims to simplify the system for managing obstructions on our pavements, for example, tables and chairs. The policy will allow the pavement to be used for such purposes to support businesses and allow the safe and free movement of all users by the management of temporary obstructions which can be placed on the pavement or street.

Businesses and residents were consulted during the development of the policy in order to balance commercial needs with the practical needs of residents – such as access for disabled people and those with pushchairs – and to support businesses fairly and equally.

Who does this apply to?

This policy covers non-fixed or temporary objects that obstruct the pavement or street. It does not include objects placed on private forecourts or within trading pitches that are regulated by the Street Trading Team. Objects include:

  • advertising boards (A boards)
  • dispensing units (free newspapers)
  • skips
  • building materials
  • cranes
  • scaffold and hoarding
  • shoring
  • containers, welfare facilities etc
  • deposits
