Islington Council has many outdoor spaces across the borough - both 'free sports zones', where you can just turn up and play, and spaces for hire. A number of popular sports are catered for, including football, hockey, basketball, tennis, cricket and bowls. For more information about sports and leisure centres, see the links on the right.
Hired facilities are areas where you pay to hire that space for a specific amount of time, e.g. one hour. When you have booked an area, you have sole use of the area for your allotted time - no-one else can use it.
Hire charges are reviewed annually. For information about specific hire charges, contact the site. (Contact numbers for each hire area are given on the relevant web page.)
Free Sports Zones are exactly that, areas where you can just turn up and play your sport.
These areas are for use by everyone and you cannot book them. If someone is already using an area when you arrive, you will have to wait until they have finished - or why not ask if you can join in?
Facilities vary from site to site and surfaces include tarmac, redgra, rubberised pitches and grass. Some areas have goal posts, and also tennis nets and basketball goals.
If you are interested in hiring an outdoor facility or using a 'free sports zone', or wish to browse the different facilities available, you can find out more on the following pages by selecting either of the two Outdoor Spaces links, on the left..
Due to a change in legislation, the Greenspace and Leisure division has had to apply for premises licences for many of its parks and open spaces. This is to ensure that the division can continue with its policy of hosting community events, funfairs, circuses and so on. We have an events policy that we use to regulate the number and type of events, to ensure that they are suitable and reduce any potential negative impacts on the local community.
For further information, please see the Greenspace Events Policy information at the foot of this page, or call the Greenspace and Leisure Support Services team on 020 7527 4953.
The waiting list is now at least 10 years, therefore applications have unfortunately had to close with the names currently on the list.
If you need any further details, please contact the Greenspace & Leisure Support Services Team on 020 7527 4953.
