Museum of the order of St John

Cover of an old exhibit from the museum

Explore almost one thousand years of history in our museum, which reveals the many stories of the Order of St John.

Beginning in medieval Jerusalem, Knights of the Order fought in the crusades as defenders of Christianity. They also established a hospital that provided exemplary nursing care for the poor. In the following years the Order amassed great wealth and lands throughout Europe. In England these were lost during the Reformation. In the nineteenth century a new British Order founded St John Ambulance, continuing its role of caring for the sick and poor up to the present day.

Come and visit the Norman crypt and Tudor Gatehouse that are relics of the Order’s ancient home in Clerkenwell, as well as the interactive St. John Ambulance Gallery.
