Under Occupation

Under Occupation

If you are in a property that is too big for you, you could apply to us as an 'underoccupier'.

Our underoccupation scheme could help you move to a smaller, more manageable home and offer you a cash incentive plus financial help with your move. We will be able to give you help or advice on removals and many other issues associated with moving.

As an under occupier you will have a higher priority on the transfer list

If you are over 55, you can apply for sheltered accommodation. If you are over 60 you could apply for the Seaside and country Homes scheme. We will also consider separate housing for families under occupying their property. For example, if a couple with an adult child is under occupying, we could house you in two one-bedroom flats rather than a two-bedroom flat. (Find out more from the rehousing team)

The council's under occupation Officer will offer help with and/or advice on:

  • bidding for a smaller property on the Home connections website
  • removals
  • clearing your property of unwanted furniture and carpets

In addition:

  • you will receive £500 for every spare bedroom you give up (subject to you having a clear rent account)
  • tenants in four bedroom, or larger properties, may be allowed to under occupy in their new home by one bedroom
  • tenants in four bedroom, or larger properties, may be allowed to under occupy in their new home by one bedroom
  • you can bid for both council and housing association properties in Islington.
