Housing Needs and Strategy

Your home, your future: laying a solid foundation for improving lives and creating opportunity - Islington’s new housing strategy 2009-2014

At Islington’s Housing Network event on the 16 July, Councillor Barbara Smith, Executive Member for Housing and Community Safety, launched the borough’s new housing strategy. The strategy sets out the council’s plans for housing over the next five years.

Developing the strategy began with the council commissioning a Housing Needs Assessment in 2007. The findings of this study formed a robust evidence base detailing the housing aspirations and requirements of Islington residents.

The new strategy has been achieved through a wide-ranging consultation programme with residents and different housing stakeholders initiated in January 2008. Approximately 2000 questionnaires were sent out to residents, and opportunities to get involved in consultation were promoted on the internet and through articles in community and council publications.

The strategy was guided in its development by the Islington Housing Commission, an independent body of housing professionals, tenant and community representatives and political party nominees, who helped identify the strategy’s objectives and priorities.

The strategy has 5 objectives to:

  • make housing a solid foundation for improving lives and creating opportunities
  • deliver more homes
  • build better quality homes and neighbourhoods
  • provide better managed homes and services
  • promote better engagement and influence

The actions in the strategy designed to address these objectives will give direction to the work of the Housing and Adult Social Services Department over the next five years and contribute to meeting the council’s wider objectives set out in the Sustainable Communities Strategy.
