Homelessness

Many people assume that if they become homeless they will be housed in a council flat in Islington. However, this is not the case, as Islington only has a duty to house people for an interim period who fall within certain categories.

This section contains information on homelessness and how the council deals with households who approach it for help.

No Second Night Out

No Second Night Out aims to make sure that no one who has recently arrived on London’s streets will sleep out for a second night. No Second Night Out is part of the London Mayors overall commitment to end rough sleeping in London by the end of 2012. No Second Night Out aims to help people who are sleeping rough in London for the first time, and find them an immediate alternative so they don’t need to spend another night on the streets.

Rough sleepers are very vulnerable to crime, drugs and alcohol, and at high risk of serious illness, and potential early death. A new assessment centre has been set up which is open 24/7 to support this work and can provide a way off the streets for new rough sleepers in London. At the centre, workers will offer people help so that they do not need to return to the streets; for many this will be returning to their home area, reconnecting with family and support networks.

You can help us make sure no one spends a second night out, if you see someone sleeping rough you can call our 24/7 rough sleeping helpline on: 0870 383 3333 or visit: www.nosecondnightout.org.uk
