Private Sector Opportunities

Islington Council is dedicated to working with private landlords to meet housing needs within the borough.

We operate a number of different schemes, including:

An empty furnished dwelling may be eligible for a 10% reduction. If you think you may be entitled to a discount, or are the owner of a second home, contact the Council Tax office on 020 7527 2633 for more details.

If you know of any change in circumstances which may affect the amount of council tax you pay you must let us know. For example, if you get the single person discount, and you no longer live on your own, you must tell us.

Exemptions:

  • Unoccupied Dwellings
  • Structural alteration or major repair works or dwellings recently erected - exempt for six months only
  • Owned by a charitable body and empty less than six months
  • Unfurnished and empty less than six months
  • Left empty by someone who is in prison or is detained
  • Was previously the sole or main residence of a hospital patient in a home
  • Waiting probate or letters of administration to be granted - exempt for up to six months
  • Occupation is forbidden by law
  • Waiting to be occupied by a minister of religion
  • Previously the residence of a person who is receiving care somewhere other than a hospital, residential care home, nursing home, mental nursing home or hostel
  • Left empty to provide care to another person
  • Left empty by student(s) who are resident elsewhere during term time
  • An unoccupied dwelling where a mortgagee is in possession under the mortgage, which is the responsibility of the bankrupt's trustee
  • A dwelling consisting of a pitch or a mooring which is not occupied by a caravan or boat
  • Unoccupied annex to an occupied dwelling
