Responding to complaints regarding poor housing conditions

We are happy to give guidance if you need advice relating to private sector housing and disrepair issues.

The Residential Environmental Health team provides services in the areas of:

  • reactive response to complaints from residents in private sector housing (both private landlords and housing associations) relating to disrepair, health and safety issues and statutory nuisances (except noise). For further information on noise issues, follow the link under related information on the right of this page

  • responding to complaints relating to filthy and verminous premises and liasing with the appropriate services in order to achieve the most satisfactory outcome

  • responding to complaints relating to defective drainage in residential premises

  • in certain cases where the landlords/agents are in arrears, responding to disconnection of utilities (water/gas/electricity)

  • assessing properties using the Housing Health and Safety Rating System for health and safety hazards

  • licensing properties under the HMO Licensing Scheme (Housing Act 2004)

  • proactively surveying the Borough for non decent properties in the private sector occupied by vulnerable households and then taking action, wherever possible, to make these properties decent
