Environmental Health - Residential

The Residential Environmental Health Service aims to improve conditions in the poorest private rented housing in the borough through working in partnership with owners and where necessary by enforcement.

The service covers the following activities:

  • responding to complaints regarding poor housing conditions. For more information visit the Poor Housing Conditions page (see the link on the left)

  • responding to complaints about rubbish on private land, smell and other nuisances arising in privately owned housing, e.g. bonfires

  • licensing certain houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) and ensuring that they meet the council's HMO standards

  • providing grants to improve poor housing conditions that do not meet the basic legal standard. For more information visit the Private Sector Housing Grants page linked from the right of this page

  • advising landlords on their legal responsibilities
