Young carers are children and young people who look after or help another family member who is disabled. physically or mentally ill, or has a substance misuse problem. They carry out, often on a regular basis, significant or substantial caring tasks, taking on a level of responsibility that is inappropriate to their age or development.
This definition is used in the Islington Young Carers Strategy which can be downloaded below and is taken from the Social Care Institute of Excellence (SCIE).
In Islington, we define young carers as being up to the age of 25.
Family Action Islington have two projects that support young carers. They have a project for young carers up to the age of 16 and a young adults carers project, which supports carers up to the age of 25.

Young carers can also take part in all of the events for carers that are organised in the borough. Have a look through the carers pages to find out more. There are training courses on how to cope with being a carer, as well as events that celebrate caring.
There is a qualification for carers, which young carers may be interesting in obtaining. This is run by City and Guilds. Have a look at the 'Learning for Living' web site on the right for more information about this.
There are a number of national organisations that support young carers, including YCNet which is run by the Princess Royal Trust for Carers. Take a look at the web sites on the right for more information on these.
