Islington Council prides itself in representing a diverse community. Communities within the borough need flexible services that support their needs in a range of ways. Services must be flexible enough to ensure refugees reach their full potential and contribute to society as equal members.
To ensure that this happens, the Refugee Integration Strategy 2005-2008 was produced by the council and its key strategic partners, such as the Police and the Primary Care Trust and the Voluntary and Community Sector. It takes a co-ordinated and strategic approach to the integration of refugees in Islington and the better planning of accessible and relevant services.
The Strategy is supported by six Refugee Action Plans across the key areas of refugee integration. The Refugee Strategic Planning Board (RSPB) oversaw the formation of this strategy and will now oversee the progress of the actions outlined with the strategy. They will also monitor the evaluation of the impact of the strategy through these action plans.
The Islington Refugee Integration Strategy particularly recognises the valuable work carried out by the Voluntary and Community Sector in supporting the integration of refugees in Islington. The action plans also demonstrate the evidence of private sector contributions to refugee integration especially in the employment, education, and housing sectors.
