Services for Adults

Services for Adults

Welcome to the Services for Adults pages. These pages explain the different services available for adults in Islington, and the assessment process used to find out about your needs.

Our Community Care services include:

  • helping older people to live independently at home or caring for them in residential homes or day centres
  • helping disabled people and their families through care at home, in day centres or in residential or nursing homes
  • helping people who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind or visually impaired
  • helping people with mental health problems to live independently or in residential care
  • helping people with learning disabilities to get the best out of life through support for work, day activities or residential services
  • supporting people who are returning home after a stay in hospital
  • helping people living with HIV

Support can be provided at home, at a day centre, at a care home and sometimes at a combination of these. We work with statutory organisations such as Islington Primary Care Trust, voluntary and community organisations such as Age Concern Islington and private agencies such as London Care to provide these services.

Staff that provide these varied and sometimes complex services include social workers, key workers, home carers, occupational therapists and rehabilitation workers.

The main goal of Adult Social Services is to support older people, disabled people and people with a long-term condition or illness to live as independently as posssible in the community, preferably in their own home.

If you want to speak to someone about getting support from Adult Social Services or about a service you already receive, please contact the Information and Access Team listed below.

Assessing Your Needs

Before we can arrange services for you, you will need to have an assessment. Initially we will gather some information over the phone and establish that an assessment is required and what type. If it is, an assessment at home will be carried out to identify your needs, and to decide whether you qualify for a service under the guidelines. A professional, such as a social worker or occupational therapist, will come to see you to carry out your assessment.

If you have a carer, we will listen carefully to their views during your assessment, and will take their needs into account. We will ask your carer whether they want a separate assessment of their needs.

If you qualify for services under the eligibility criteria, the assessment will be the basis for planning the services you could receive.

For more information on the assessment process and eligibility criteria, click on the Needs Assessment link under the main navigation list on the left side of this page.

Charges for Care

All the services we provide to help people live at home cost money. These costs are met through a combination of Government grants, council tax and from the income raised from charging users for the services we provide. Islington Council wants to help as many people as it can to live at home independently and as safely as possible.

Usually there is a charge for support at home, but we will assess you to ensure that the charges for the care and support we provide are fair and affordable.

For more information, click on the Charges for Care link under the main navigation list on the left side of this page.
