Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy is a service offered to people when, as a result of permanent and substantial disability, they are having difficulties carrying out everyday tasks by themselves.

This includes activities such as:

  • getting in and out of bed
  • getting on and off the toilet
  • negotiating steps and stairs

A member of the occupational therapy team will assess the difficulties that a person or carers are having and will try to find solutions where possible.

The team can offer advice about alternative ways to carry out tasks, with or without special equipment and small adaptations.

Where this is not sufficient to overcome a practical difficulty, the team may recommend that larger adaptations to the property be carried out either by the landlord - if the person lives in council or housing association property, or through a disabled facilities grant if the person is an owner occupier or private tenant.

The team also offer a one-off visit to those people who are experiencing problems with getting in and out of the bath, and would benefit from simple equipment such as a bath board, seat, or rail to assist them.
