Disabled Children's Team

The team provides services for children with disabilities and their families.

The team aims to provide a quality, child-centred service for disabled children and young people (and their families or carers) who live in Islington.

The disability must be "permanent and substantial" within one or more of the following areas:

  • physical disability
  • severe learning disability
  • blind or partially sighted
  • severe communication disability
  • deaf
  • chronic illness

The team provides a full, statutory social work service that includes:

  • advice, assistance and information on resources, health, education, play and leisure
  • guidance on housing benefits
  • emotional support and counselling
  • joint work and liaison with other professionals
  • specialist assessments, provision and management of care packages
  • information on specific disabilities and related issues
  • promotion and protection of disabled children's welfare
  • future planning for school leavers
  • referrals to other services
  • duty social work service

Other services supplied by the team include:

  • the register of disabled children and young people and regular newsletter
  • good neighbour scheme
  • provision of equipment for deaf children and their families
  • charity project run by volunteers

Making a Referral

A person can make a referral by phone, letter or going to the office to see the duty social worker.

If it is clear that the person fits the criteria and appointment will be made for an initial assessment, usually at their home.
