Family Group Conferences

Family Group Conferences

A Family Group Conference (FGC) is a meeting where a family, including relatives and friends, can come together to make decisions about their children. A family who are experiencing difficulties or finding it hard to cope for whatever reason, may wish to be referred by their social worker for a FGC.

It gives families a chance to have a real say in what happens, and how their children will be kept safe. FGCs give families the chance to be listened to and be taken seriously, as we believe that families can make the best decisions if they have all the information they need.

A referral for a FGC would be made by a social worker, and other workers (such as a health visitor, mental health worker, family support worker, etc) may be invited to the meeting. This is so that they can give information to the family about their concerns and what support they could give to help the family make their decisions.

A FGC co-ordinator will meet with every family member and help him or her to prepare for the meeting.
