We want the borough of Islington to thrive for generations. We want people to continue to enjoy their surroundings and appreciate where they live. This is why we are committed to improving our environment, now and for the future.
One of Islington's key corporate priorities is to foster a greener, cleaner and safer borough for our residents. A greener borough means protecting and improving our local environment, using resources efficiently and ensuring that future generations ability to meet their needs is not compromised by our actions today.
Islington has among the smallest amount of green space per person of all London boroughs. Maintaining our green spaces is key to protecting our natural environment, which is vital for many plant and animal species. Private gardens also play an important role is protecting valuable wildlife resource.
There are 52 places within the borough that have been designated as Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation, and there are estimated 50 000 trees in Islington. There are 16 sports courts and pitches and more than 60 children’s play areas, plus several memorial gardens and parks.
As well as the parks and playgrounds, we are committed to providing a cleaner and safer environment on our streets and in the places we live. The residents of Islington should be able to benefit from clean, safe and unpolluted streets, free from rubbish and graffiti.
Buildings have a significant impact on our environment too. We all want Islington to benefit from exciting new developments, and for residents to improve their homes. Our aim is to ensure that these developments are fair on other people in the borough, and that they are designed and built within strong criteria for minimising our impact on the environment, both now and in the future.
Islington council has adopted a Sustainability Action Plan, which sets the strategic direction for sustainability in the borough for the next five years. This overarching plan pulls together council strategies around waste and recycling, biodiversity, energy efficiency and renewables and climate change. The Sustainability Action Plan will be available on the website soon.
