Cold Weather Emergency Plan

The cemeteries under our control are currently experiencing adverse weather conditions.

Within Islington and St Pancras Cemeteries we are keeping route 1 gritted to maintain a safe route to the Crematorium, Islington Burial Chapel and Office.

Please be advised that we do not guarantee to grit the other roads within the cemetery. Visitors are advised to postpone their visit to the cemetery unless it is to attend a funeral until the snow and ice has gone.

In the event of advance warning of freezing weather the following will happen:

• A brief meeting of the senior managers present on site.
• Decision on whether it is practical to salt route 1 during the day or into the early evening for the freeze the next day.
• If not salted previous day, staff to salt immediately route 1, if necessary starting earlier than normal.
• If time permits, salt route 2.
• If time permits, salt route 3.
• If it is essential to make the approach to a burial that day safer, do it at the same time as route 2.
• Management review in the afternoon to check on progress of first salting, check the weather forecast and then to decide on whether to carry on or not. It might be prudent to leave the unsalted roads to concentrate on keeping the existing salted major roads open.
• Management to keep monitoring the situation daily until thaw occurs.

• If time permits, salt route 2.
• If time permits, salt route 3.
• If it is essential to make the approach to a burial that day safer, do it at the same time as route 2.
• Management review in the afternoon to check on progress of first salting, check the weather forecast and then to decide on whether to carry on or not.  It might be prudent to leave the unsalted roads to concentrate on keeping the existing salted major roads open.
• Management to keep monitoring the situation daily until thaw occurs.
• Regularly monitor salt level in bunker to ensure we do not run out.
