New business recycling service is launched

Islington Council, in partnership with Enterprise, is launching a new recycling service for businesses. The new service will collect a wider range of materials including glass, plastic packaging, paper, cardboard and tins. We are also extending our business food waste collection scheme across the borough.

The materials will be collected alongside normal waste in new three compartment vehicles fuelled by bio-diesel which has been recovered and refined from cooking oil collected from local restaurants. The new vehicles will help improve Islington's environment because it will reduce the time that waste is placed out for collection and also the number of vehicles needed to collect the waste and recycling.

This will also help reduce the cost to participating businesses by providing a more effective service whilst delivering an environmentally sustainable model for the future.

For further information please contact Enterprise on 0845 226 5101 or email commercialwaste.islington@enterprise.plc.uk

Islington wins awards for its war on waste!

Islington Council’s comprehensive package of waste minimisation initiatives received national recognition recently when we picked up two awards for our work to cut waste in the borough.

Islington won the “Best Local Authority Recycling Initiative” award at the LetsRecycle.com Awards for our work that led to a 9% cut in the amount of waste produced in the borough in 2008-09 compared to the year before. We also picked up a special prize at the VALPAK Awards for Excellence in Waste Management for our “Consistent Commitment to Developing Environmental Awareness & Sustainability”.

Clearly this kind of progress wouldn’t have been possible without the efforts of local residents, so we'd like to say a big thank you to all of you who have played your part in cutting the amount of waste that ends up going into landfill.

If you want to find out more about how we can help you cut your waste, visit the Reduce and Reuse section of our website.

Join us on Facebook!

We've launched a Facebook group called "Recycling Islington" to help keep you updated about new services, events and campaigns in the borough. You'll also be able to share tips and ideas with other local residents to on how to cut waste and recycle more. If you're on Facebook, simply click on Recycling Islington to join us!

You can now recycle even more!

Good news – you can now place drinks cartons and household plastic packaging (such as yoghurt pots and fruit punnets) out for recycling, in addition to all your other recyclables. This means that there will be practically no materials left for you to throw out! You can now recycle:

  • Cartons (tetra paks)
  • Household plastic packaging – bottles and packaging containers of any colour
  • Cardboard – boxes, corrugated card and greetings cards
  • Glass – jars and bottles of all colours
  • Metal tins, cans and packaging – food and drink cans, empty aerosol cans, aluminium foil and metal caps
  • Paper – newspapers, magazines, catalogues, yellow pages, junk mail and envelopes (including windowed)

This has been made possible as we will now be sending your recycling to new Materials Recovery Facilities (MRFs) which are capable of sorting a wider range of materials.

If you want to find out more about the full range of materials that you can now recycle, please visit the Recycling at Home page.

Why not have a look and make sure you're recycling as much as you can.

Chute Recycling on Estates

Following successful recycling trials in the EC1 NDC area, six estates have received a brand new chute recycling scheme. On each of the estates, chutes have been converted so that residents can use one chute to recycle, and another chute to dispose of their refuse.

Islington Council are trying hard to ensure that all residents have easily accessible recycling facilities. These new facilities mean that recycling is easier than ever for six estates.

These are:

  • Rahere House
  • President House
  • Galway House
  • Grayson House
  • Gastigny House

Lagonier House and Anchor House also use chute recycling systems.
