Street Property Recycling

Man filling his green box

From 4 April 2011 recycling at home is compulsory in Islington. To find out more information, please visit our Compulsory Recycling page.

Residents living in street properties, such as houses, have three recycling collection services:

Green box

  • Drinks cartons
  • Household plastic packaging
  • Paper
  • Cardboard
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Metal tins and cans

Food waste container

  • Meat and fish scraps
  • Fruit and vegetable peelings
  • Eggs and egg shells
  • Dairy products
  • Cut flowers
  • Tea bags and coffee grinds

Green waste bag

  • Grass clippings
  • Small tree branches
  • Garden weeds
  • Leaves and plants
  • Prunings and hedge trimmings

You may wish to mark your containers with your property number to keep your own container. Please leave everything loose in your container and do not separate items into bags.

Collection times

All your recycling, food and green waste is collected on the same day in single split-body vehicle, making it as easy and simple as possible for you to recycle. Please ensure that your green box, food waste container and green waste bag are placed out for collection at ground level and are visible by 6.30 am on your collection day.

Replacement containers, missed collections and further information

Please use the General Enquiries link on the right of this page for replacement containers, information flyers about the service or to report missed collections or problems.

Recycling wheeled bins

Residents in street properties can have a green wheeled bin instead of green boxes. If you would like to have a recycling bin, please email recycling@islington.gov.uk or call 0207 527 2000.

Once you have requested a wheeled bin, we will conduct a brief site visit to check that your property is suitable for a wheeled bin. If there is more than one property in your building, we will write to each property to inform them that a wheeled bin has been requested and allow two weeks for any comments.

Odour filters

We are no longer supplying odour filters for the kitchen caddy. Emptying the caddy into your external container approx 3 times a week should reduce the potential for smells. Using a cornstarch liner can also help to keep your caddy clean.

If you would like to purchase odour filters, the following suppliers sell them. Other suppliers may be available.
