Recycling in the kitchen

Recycling in the kitchen

From 4 April 2011 recycling at home is compulsory in Islington. To find out more information, please visit our Compulsory Recycling page.

Estates and blocks of flats

14,000 households located in estates and blocks are recycling over 14 tonnes of food waste a week! To find out more about this scheme please click onto recycling on estates .

Street properties

If you live in a street property, food waste is collected from your doorstep. This scheme turns your food waste into compost. Two containers are provided to residents receiving this service:

  • a small, green 5-litre kitchen caddie, which can be stored in your kitchen
  • a brown kerbside container with a self-locking lid

Food Waste – Scrape the Plate

Cooked and uncooked food can be recycled in your brown kerbside food container. Please leave your brown kerbside container with the handle upright as this locks the bin.

Caddy liners

You can line your containers with compostable liners which are normally made of cornstarch. Look for the compostable symbol. The bags will disintegrate if wet and left outside so please place them inside the food waste container. Please note we are unable to accept plastic bags and degradable bags because they do not breakdown sufficiently in the composting process.

Supermarkets and local retailers sell the liners. A retailers list is available to download at the bottom of this page.

Odour filters

We are no longer supplying odour filters for the kitchen caddy. Emptying the caddy into your external container approx three times a week should reduce the potential for smells. Using a cornstarch liner can also help to keep your caddy clean.

If you would like to purchase odour filters, the following suppliers sell them. Other suppliers may be available.
