Doorstep Collections

Islington Council provides weekly doorstep recycling collections for estate residents at 25,000 properties throughout the borough. Estate residents in Islington are currently recycling the equivalent weight of twenty-two double decker buses a month!

To find out if your property receives a doorstep service, please look up your property on the link below, called Door to Door Collection - Estates. Properties are listed in alphabetical order of street name.

Collection Times

Please place your container outside your front door before 8am on your collection day.

What To Put In Your Recycling Bag

• paper - newspaper and magazine, catalogues, white pages telephone directories, writing paper, envelopes (with plastic windows removed), yellow pages and junk mail
• glass - clear, green and brown glass jars and bottles
• aluminium and steel (tin) food and drink cans
• plastic - bottles only (milk, shampoo, drink and other plastic bottles)
• mixed cardboard, including boxes and packaging

What Not to Put in Your Recycling Bag

• no other plastics such as plastic tubs and yoghurt pots
• no tetra packs, light bulbs, glass sheets
• no plastic bags
• no rubbish
• following the guidance of the Household Waste Recycling Act and in support of the charities sector, the scheme does not accept textiles

Estates Bring Sites

There are also over 130 estates with recycling banks. These are generally large mixed recycling bins, suitable for putting loose, unsorted recyclable materials in.

You can put the following materials in the banks:

• paper and cardboard
• glass bottles and jars
• plastic bottles
• metal tins, cans, foil and aerosols

Chute Recycling on Estates

Following successful recycling trials in the EC1 NDC area, six estates are receiving a brand new chute recycling scheme. On each of the estates, chutes are being converted so that residents can use one chute to recycle, and another chute to dispose of their refuse.

The recycling scheme involves the use of a dedicated chute for recycling. The chute hatches are painted and clearly marked for recycling, and a sign advises residents which chute to use for recycling and which chute to use for refuse. Residents still have chutes available for disposing of their rubbish.

Islington Council is trying hard to make recycling as easy as possible for all residents. With the new recycling service, recycling on these estates is as easy as disposing of rubbish.

Chutes for disposal of rubbish are still easily available to all residents.

At present, the chute recycling scheme is operating at:

• Turnpike House
• Grayson House
• Galway House
• Gastigny House
• Lagonier House

At Anchor House, we are piloting a different type of chute recycling scheme where one chute can be used for both refuse and recycling.
