Swap online - Freecycle

Swap online - Freecycle

Freecycle is a not-for-profit online community whose aim is to keep good stuff out of landfill by helping people reuse more. Islington already has over 11,000 active members who are using it to give (or get) items for free in their local area.

How does it work?

All you need to do is sign up with a local group and get freecycling! You can then:

1. Get an item someone has offered - Simply respond to a member's offer and you just might get it. After that, it's up to the giver to decide who gets the gift.

2. Find a new home for an item - Just post a short description of what you're offering on the local site. Regular emails summarising what's available are sent out to members, who respond if they're interested.

3. Request an item – If no one is advertising something you are after, don’t fear; you can also request something by posting up a wanted ad. You may just find that one of the other group members has exactly what you’re looking for!

What kind of items get put on Freecycle?

The answer is simple - everything and anything! From computers, TVs and stereos to pot plants and furniture; you never know what someone may offer. Everything posted must be free, legal, and appropriate for all ages.

How do I join?

  • Click on the Freecycle link on the right of this page.
  • Type "Islington" into the search box in the middle of the page.
  • Click on your local group, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on 'sign up' to get going!

One final tip - if you're on a border between two areas, you can join both groups. In fact there are no rules about how many groups you can join, so you could join all four!
