A Greener, Cleaner Islington

Having a clean and tidy environment is a real priority for people living and working in Islington. The cleanliness of the streets and estates and the disposal of waste have a significant impact on the perceived and actual quality of life.

We provide a doorstep refuse collection service to 87,000 households.

We also offer a free bulky waste collection service and residents can take their waste and recycling to the Household Reuse and Recycling Centre. Remember that over 60% of your dustbin can easily be recycled and there are many ways of reducing your waste. For more information, click the link under Related Information on the right of this page.

The street cleansing service aims to keep all streets swept and clean from litter and we remove all fly tips, graffiti and abandoned vehicles as quickly as possible.

We also provide a commercial waste collection service to over 4,000 businesses and schools and clinical and hazardous waste services.

If you are a disabled person or elderly and have no one to assist with the removal of your refuse such as a carer, neighbour or relative, Street Management Services may be able to provide an assisted collection. Please telephone Contact Islington on 0207 527 2000 to arrange an assessment visit.

Street Environment Services is now operated on an area basis: North, South, East and West. Each team provides in their own areas:

  • street cleansing
  • refuse collections
  • recycling collections
  • fly tip investigations
  • graffiti/ fly posting removal
  • monitoring of ICSL contract
