Frequently Asked Questions About Planning

You can find the answers to many planning questions by clicking the Frequently Asked Questions link under Do It Online, right, and searching with the keyword "Planning".

Changes to Householder Development Rights

It is now easier to extend your home following significant changes to planning law. Householders’ rights have changed which means you can carry out certain work without the need for planning permission. This will make it easier for people to improve their homes and at the same time reduce the number of planning applications that the council’s planning team has to process.

The rules only apply to houses which are occupied by one household, in other words planning laws remain unchanged for people living in any other kind of property, including flats and maisonettes.

The key areas that are affected relate to:

  • the height and size of extensions
  • side-facing windows
  • outbuildings
  • paving of front gardens
  • roof alterations
  • solar panels

If you're in doubt as to whether work you are considering needs planning permission or not, click the Planning Portal link on the right (under Useful Websites), or contact the planning team on 020 7527 2000.
