Islington's planning policies are set out in our Unitary Development Plan (UDP) - which was agreed in June 2002. The UDP provides the basis for all the council's planning decisions. It contains broad strategic policies in part one of the plan, and more detailed policies in part two.
There is also a proposals map which shows areas where specific policies and proposals apply. You can see the text of the UDP on this site, but if you require the proposals map you will have to purchase a copy.
The council also produces a range of additional advice - known as Supplementary Planning Guidance, see related information. This includes topic based advice, such as affordable housing, and planning briefs for specific sites where redevelopment or renewal is expected to take place. Detailed planning guidance is also being prepared for the King's Cross area and for other parts of the borough.
Design guidance has also been prepared for all of Islington's 38 Conservation Areas.
You can view the UDP and related documents by clicking the Unitary Development Plan link under the Planning Policy folder on the menu to the left.
In September 2004 a major reform of the planning system was introduced through the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act. As part of the reform, the Unitary Development Plans are being abolished and replaced by Local Development Frameworks (LDF).
A Local Development Framework is a portfolio of planning policy documents. It will be possible to revise individual parts of the LDF, thus enabling planning authorities to respond to changing circumstances and to keep their plans and policies up to date. The new system will be a continuous programme of plan revision.
You can view all the LDF documents the council is preparing by clicking the Local Development Framework link on the menu to the left.
