UDP

The Unitary Development Plan (UDP) sets out the council's planning policies, and provides the basis for all the council's planning decisions. Islington's UDP was adopted on 28 June 2002.

Preparing and updating the UDP is a legal requirement, and there are complex procedures to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to object to the plan, and that these objections are heard by an independent inspector.

The present plan is a revised version of the council's original plan which was adopted in November 1994. Proposed changes to the 1994 plan were published in the summer of 2000, and were the subject of a public inquiry later that year. Further changes were made in 2001, and these form the basis of this plan.

In September 2004, a major reform of the planning system was introduced through the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act. As part of the reform, the Unitary Development Plans are being abolished and replaced by Local Development Frameworks (LDF). Click on the link on the right for further information.

Important Note on UDP Policies

A number of policies from the existing Islington’s Unitary Development Plan (2002) have been deleted by a Direction of the Secretary of State (see list below).
Please note that these policies expired on 27 September 2007 and they are no longer used in determining planning applications.
