Islington Council is continuing to improve and develop its planning policies, through the publication of supplementary planning guidance (SPG). SPG is used to support the council's adopted Unitary Development Plan, and is an important factor in determining planning applications.
Sustainable development is one of the council's key priorities. Sustainable development looks at improving the environment and quality of life.
Recently we have produced guidance on a range of topics promoting sustainability - sustainability assessments, green travel plans and car free housing, for example. This SPG complements these by focusing on the environmental impacts of the development and construction process in Islington, to ensure that it is undertaken in a more environmentally friendly way.
To assist in this aim, we have produced guidance on 'green' construction. This looks at relevant environmental issues, environmental management and benchmarking from the buildings development phase to its operational phase.
It should be noted that the SPG on green construction has been written to address the range of development applications received in Islington in terms of size, type and location. Inevitably, this means a loss of detail for particular development types.
