Secondary Schools

Islington Council has approved an education vision for its secondary schools. It has at its centre the needs of every child and sits at the heart of the council’s overarching vision of “One Islington” which is to have a place with thriving, active and cohesive communities.

Islington secondary schools have secured over £100 million from the Government’s ‘Building Schools for the Future’ fund. Alongside this programme, the council is supporting two Academy proposals, the first at the site of St Mary Magdalene Primary School and a second at Islington Green School. Every secondary school will be refurbished and some will be completely rebuilt, creating an opportunity for Islington to design and build the best possible learning environments, in order to deliver the education vision. 

Building Schools for the Future – planning applications

Islington Council has now received planning consent for the proposed redevelopment of the schools which are within the first phase of Islington’s ‘Schools for the Future’ initiative. These are:

• Holloway School
• St Aloysius’ College
• Highbury Grove School (which includes the co-location of Samuel Rhodes School).

Current guidance at public consultation

As part of the next phase of Islington’s Building Schools for the future scheme, we are putting together Planning Guidance for the Paradise Park / New River College Pupil Referral Units (PRUs) and we want your thoughts and feedback in writing by Friday 12 December 2008.

What Happens Next?

It is expected that there will be three phases of development for Islington’s secondary schools, as set out below.

First Phase Schools - January 2008, construction commenced

• Highbury Grove School
• Holloway School
• St Aloysius’ College

Second Phase Schools - Planning applications submitted summer 2009

• Central Foundation Boys School
• Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Language College
• Islington Arts and Media School
• New Pupil Referral Unit 1

Third Phase Schools - July 2011 proposed commencement of construction

• Mount Carmel Technology School for Girls
• Highbury Fields School
• New Pupil Referral Unit 2

Additional information

In order to provide guidance for the future development of the schools in January 2006 the Council adopted planning guidance for the following schools:

• Highbury Grove School
• Holloway School
• St Aloysius’ College

In March 2008 the council adopted planning guidance for the following schools:

• Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Language College
• Islington Arts and Media College

The purpose of the planning guidance is to:

• identify opportunities and constraints for development
• provide a clear indication of permissible development
• give certainty to the school, developers and the community about development parameters and requirements.
