Crossrail 2

Crossrail 2

Scheme Description

This is a new railway linking north east and south west London via central London. A safeguarding direction has been in place since February 1991 for a conventional tube line, with stations at King's Cross, Angel and Essex Road (next to the existing station).

The main purposes of the project are to:

  • Relieve congestion on the Victoria Line (Kings Cross- Victoria)
  • Relieve congestion on the District Line around Earls Court
  • Connect areas not on the network e.g. Hackney, Kings Road
  • Offer options of wider connections in south west and north east London

Specific works within Islington

Islington Council has strongly supported the Safeguarded Scheme, which includes the following:

  • Stations at Kings Cross, Angel and Essex Road.
  • A ventilation shaft on the corner of Essex Road and Gaskin Street.
  • A tunnel under the borough. (There are a number of possible alternative routes to this project, specific works may therefore vary considerably from those listed).

Powers and Timetable

The scheme is being taken forward by a new company called Cross London Rail Links Ltd (Crossrail), which is a joint venture between Transport for London and the Strategic Rail Authority.

This scheme is being reviewed in conjunction with Crossrail 1. The development of Crossrail 2 is in its early stages, current studies are reviewing the safeguarded route and some alternatives. The current timetable is for the line to be operational by 2016.
