Kings Cross is undergoing one of the largest and most complex programmes of planning and development led regeneration in Europe.
There are a number of major projects currently underway or at the planning stages. By 2020, an estimated 60 million passengers a year will pass through the King's Cross transport interchange – almost the same current passenger numbers as at Heathrow airport.
Listed below are the two major projects in the Kings Cross area, further information can be found by visiting each dedicated website. Subsequent pages highlight the other key developments underway in the area.
This includes the construction of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link service into St Pancras and extension of the existing station. In 2007, the international terminus at St Pancras will open to provide high-speed Eurostar connections to the continent followed by quick links to Stratford and Kent. The Station, situated wholly within Camden, is currently being transformed and extended ready for the start of Eurostar services. See the link on the right for more details.
Construction of a new Thameslink station is half completed and the expansion of King's Cross St Pancras Underground Station will continue until 2009.
Kings Cross/St Pancras will play a key role in the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games becoming the hub for the Olympic Javelin service, which will whisk visitors to the Olympic Park in just seven minutes.
After construction of the CTRL, the surrounding lands between the stations could become one of the largest mixed-use brown-field redevelopment’s in the UK. Situated to the north and between the two stations and sited mainly in Camden, this £2Billion new urban quarter would have a major impact on the wider area and bring significant change to both boroughs.
