Bothered by Construction Noise?

Bothered by Construction Noise?

For information on DIY noise, click the Bothered by Noise link under Related Information, on the right-hand side of this page.

If you consider noise from a construction site to be unreasonable or unnecessary, we do advise trying to visit the site office and speaking to the site manager. The contractor may not be aware that they are causing a problem. Be prepared to offer a compromise.

If you are unable to do this, contact us, giving details of the problem noise, how it affects you, the times of the problem, and the source (if you know it). This is important, as the noise may not be occurring when we visit. You must also provide your own contact details.

We hope that developers and contractors will cooperate with us in preventing avoidable noise nuisance. However, we will use powers under the Control of Pollution Act 1974 to control noise from construction and demolition sites, where necessary.

The council has a policy of setting working hours for construction sites and will normally expect developers and their contractors to adhere to them, as follows:

  • 8am - 6pm, Monday to Friday
  • 8am - 1pm, Saturdays
  • No noisy work on Sundays or Bank Holidays (unless by prior agreement in special circumstances)

Under certain specific circumstances, noisy work may take place outside these hours. For example, for the delivery of very large items of plant which may involve traffic restrictions, the police often insist that this only goes ahead at weekends or during the evening.

Other Contacts

Some major construction projects in the borough have their own helplines and web sites.

Some larger contractors have also signed up to the Considerate Contractors Scheme.
