Construction Noise

Construction Noise

Construction noise will tend to fall into one of three categories:

  • DIY (do-it-yourself work)
  • the refurbishment of a house or flat by builders
  • the construction of a new building and major construction projects

Noise from DIY activity can be annoying as people may create noise at times when neighbours want to enjoy the peace and quiet of their homes.

Most of us expect a little DIY noise now and again, but if it happens every night, weekend or continues into the night, it can be unduly disturbing. We may be able to help if the noise is excessive.

The refurbishment of a house or a flat can become a significant problem if neighbours are in during the day. There can be a conflict between two sets of legitimate rights. The right of the developer to work during normal working hours and the right a neighbour has to enjoy the peace and quiet of their home.

New builds and major construction projects are normally well controlled.

The council sees construction and demolition activity as an indication of a vibrant economy, but recognises that it can be the cause of significant short-term noise disturbance. While some disturbance may be unavoidable, the council does expect all developers and their contractors to minimise noise nuisance to neighbours.

We welcome developers and their contractors who behave considerately by keeping noise to a minimum, and we have produced a Code of Practice for Construction Sites to assist them in meeting our standards. Download this booklet by clicking the link at the bottom of this page.
