Eyes for Islington

An Eyes member reporting graffiti

Residents who want to help keep Islington’s streets greener, cleaner and safer can do so by signing up to the Eyes for Islington scheme.

Eyes members act as the eyes and ears of the borough and report issues such as dangerous footpaths, abandoned vehicles and crime hotspots. As soon as the council receives a report from an Eye, it responds to the problem as soon as possible.

The scheme was launched at the beginning of 2003, and now has approximately 1,000 volunteers from all over the borough.

How the scheme works – say what you see

It’s not always possible for the council to see what’s going on in the borough, so we need people who are willing to report problems in their streets, parks and communities.

We don’t expect our members to go on weekly patrols or give up any personal time to identify problems. All we ask is that you report any issues you come across when you are out and about. You just need to describe the problem and the location and one of our trained officers will attend to it.

The types of problems you can report

  • dumped litter and rubbish
  • flytipping and graffiti
  • missed refuse and recycling collections
  • parks and open space problems
  • overgrown trees and bushes obstructing the highway
  • potholes and damaged paving
  • defective streetlights
  • pavement obstruction
  • abandoned vehicles
  • discarded drugs needles
  • noise pollution
  • empty properties
  • dog fouling

How does the Eyes scheme make a difference?

Hazards like abandoned vehicles and dumped rubbish can cause accidents among vulnerable road users, such as the young and the elderly. By reporting these problems and other issues, such as anti-social behaviour, the Eyes scheme makes Islington a greener, cleaner and safer place to live and work.

Reducing graffiti and vandalism also improves the look of the borough, which in turn makes residents feel safer.
