The Register of Good Practice is another way of supporting practitioners in their Continuing Professional Development (CPD), alongside other activities such as attending training courses. Practitioners often find it useful to visit other settings and see the way someone else does things. These visits are focused – you go to look at a particular aspect of practice – and you can talk with a practitioner about why and how they developed their practice in this way.
A range of aspects of good early years practice are included within the Register, focused on areas and aspects of Birth to 3 and Foundation Stage, Inclusion (Special Educational Needs and English as an Additional Language) management and developing links with parents and community. If you wish to visit a setting, please contact them directly as stated on the register.
The register includes representation from all types of early years settings in the borough, including Children’s Centres and nursery schools, private and voluntary nurseries and playgroups, nursery and reception classes in schools.
Settings either nominate themselves for inclusion on the register, or are asked to do so by someone from the Early Years Service or CEA@islington’s School Improvement Service. Successful applicants are sent a pack on how to host visits including details of the need to keep a register of visitors and evaluations. Settings are also eligible for a setting-up grant of up to £200.
Following a visit to a setting on the register, you may apply for a Good Practice Development Grant of up to £100 giving a brief description of how you will use the funding to develop the quality of provision.
