Training and Development Plan

Training and Development Plan

Early years settings need to develop a yearly plan which sets out how the setting will improve the quality of services it offers to children and families. Below you can download the guidance for training and development plans and a training and development plan proforma.

This is part of the cycle of improvement that all services and institutions need to undertake. The plan should be monitored every six months and evaluated yearly. Download our Training and development plan guidance for Early Years settings and our Training and development plan proforma available at the bottom of this page.

It is important to identify priorities, set objectives and work out how you will check if your objectives have been achieved. In identifying priorities, take into account the following:

  • Ofsted recommendations: It is a requirement from Ofsted that you address the key issues identified by the inspector. Addressing the key issues in your Training and Development plan will be useful for your next inspection.

  • Ofsted self-evaluation form: What is it like for a child here?

  • Self evaluation against quality statemen

  • Workforce development needs including -

1. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for individual staff.

2. Statutory duties: initial and update training for designated people, for example, Health and Safety, SENCO, Equal Opportunities, Child Protection, First Aid.

3. Qualification ratios and progression, for example, 50% of staff with appropriate qualifications; progression towards Early Years Professional Status for graduate.

4. New practitioners: Induction Programme and Key Early Years Training (Child Protection, First Aid, Principles and Practice of the Foundation Stage, Birth to Three, Inclusion in Practice, Listening to Children, and/or Level three induction programme).
