Islington Council

Primary Schools

Of the 44 primary schools in Islington, 29 are community schools, eight are voluntary-aided Church of England schools, and the remaining seven voluntary-aided Catholic schools. In addition to the 44 primary schools run by the local authority, there are also places for pupils of primary age at St.Mary Magdalene Academy.

Primary schools cater for children from the age of 4 to 11 (i.e. school years Reception to Year 6). The Reception to Year 2 classes are called Key Stage 1 and the Year 3 to 6 classes are called Key Stage 2. All primary schools in Islington cater for pupils at both these key stages, and, additionally, a number of the borough’s primary schools have nursery provision attached.

Each school has a governing body, which is responsible for making sure that the school is run well, and that children learn successfully. Parents and carers regularly receive written reports telling them how their child is doing, and they also have opportunities to speak to their child's teacher or headteacher about these reports.

All primary schools have a number of written policies, which lay out for parents and carers the school’s position on a range of important issues. Details for each individual school can be found in its own School Prospectus or on its website.
