Building a brighter future for Islington’s schools

Islington schools are being transformed. GCSEs have improved. Millions of pounds are being invested in new state-of-the-art buildings and facilities. Specialist teaching and personalised learning plans will ensure that every child is offered the best possible opportunity to enjoy and achieve.

Education and learning are at the heart of young people’s daily experience. Islington Council is committed to transforming this experience by improving the physical environment in our schools, while continuing to raise aspirations. We want our schools to be the first choice for all Islington children and their parents.

Islington Council, Cambridge Education@Islington and Islington schools are working together on projects that will transform school buildings. Islington schools have a great future and we want you to work with us to create that future for the children of Islington.

Building Schools for the Future

Islington schools have secured over £100 million from the ‘Building Schools for the Future’ fund. This is an opportunity for Islington to design and build the best possible learning environments. Every secondary school will be substantially refurbished and some will be completely rebuilt.

Mary Magdalene Academy and City of London Academy (Islington)

Two new Academies are planned to increase the range of choices available.  St Mary Magdalene Academy is being built on the site of the former St Mary Magdalene CE primary school and will offer education for both primary and secondary school students. The Academy is sponsored by the Church of England, The primary school opened its doors in September 2007.  The secondary school is due to open in September 2008.   The new buildings include brand new accommodation for the Rosedale Early Years Centre.

Islington Council is also working with the City of London and City University on redeveloping Islington Green School as an Academy School. The council proposes the co-location of the secondary department of Richard Cloudesley School, a Special Education Needs School for children with severe physical disabilities.

Crouch Hill Community Park

Islington Council is working with its partners on a proposal to relocate Ashmount School to the site of the former Crouch Hill Recreation Centre, to provide new education and leisure facilities to children and the local community.

New North Community School

A brand new building for the New North Community School opened its doors in April 2007.   This was the first new school to be built in over two decades in Islington.  Funded by Islington Council.

Golden Lane Campus

The Golden Lane Campus will bring together Richard Cloudesley School, Prior Weston primary school and Fortune Park Sure Start Children’s Centre.

The new building will combine the children’s centre, 420 place primary school and the primary department of the special school for 30 pupils with physical impairment; all operating in an integrated, inclusive environment, and offering a full range of services to children and families. Funded by Islington Council.
