Islington currently has 44 primary schools, eight secondary schools, and three special schools. Additionally, there is alternative educational provision at New River College, for children who need support beyond that which can be provided in a mainstream setting.

All of these are supported by Cambridge Education @ Islington, which has a contract to provide schools’ services to the London Borough of Islington until 2013.

In addition to these schools, Islington is home to two academies:

  • City of London Academy, Islington, which caters for pupils of the secondary age range
  • St.Mary Magdalene Academy, which takes in pupils of the primary age range and, from September 2009, Years 7, 8 and 9 in the secondary phase

Academies are all-ability, state-funded schools, established and managed by sponsors from a wide range of backgrounds (including high performing schools and colleges, universities, businesses, and the faith communities).

Most of Islington’s schools are ‘community schools’. These are schools which are run by Islington Council, through its contractor, Cambridge Education @ Islington.

In addition to these community schools, Islington has one ‘voluntary controlled’ school, and seventeen ‘voluntary aided’ schools. In our voluntary controlled school (Central Foundation Secondary Boys), the local authority also employs the staff and sets the admissions criteria, but owns neither the school building, nor the land upon which it is set.

Islington’s voluntary-aided schools are all religious or 'faith' schools, although anyone can apply for a place. In these schools, the governing body employs the staff and sets the admissions criteria. There are eight Church of England primary schools; seven Catholic primary schools; and two Catholic secondary schools in Islington.
