The 2008 National Year of Reading is a year-long celebration of reading, in all its forms. It will help to build a greater national passion for reading – for children, families and adult learners alike. The Year will encourage people to read in businesses, homes, and communities around the country, providing new opportunities to read and helping people to access help and support through schools and libraries.
Speaking at the launch Gordon Brown, Prime Minister, said "It's not just the joy of reading, father-to-son or in the classroom, it's also the benefits of reading. It's probably one of the best anti-poverty, anti-deprivation, anti-crime, anti-vandalism policies you can think of ”.
Islington Library and Cultural services are leading on a plan that includes setting up local learning zones with all the different agencies working together and a reading campaign based in community venues . The campaign will appeal to residents in general with a reading for fun approach but with particular regard to children, families and adult learners.
You can find out more about the national campaign from the National Year of Reading website (please see the link on the right).
