Nusery Education Grant flyer

Cost of childcare – Applies to April 2007 - April 2008 financial year

Childminders range: about £100 to £200 weekly

Nurseries and playgroups range: £67.50 to £218.50 for local authority and community nurseries depending on household income, hours used, age of child and whether or not you live in the borough, £100 - £300 weekly for private nurseries.

The Nursery Education Grant (NEG), which is not means-tested, exists to ensure that all parents who want nursery education for their children can get it. It is available during term time for children aged three and four years, from the beginning of the term after their third birthday. It is worth up to £500 each term up to 38 weeks and it covers up to five sessions weekly of 2.5 hours each, with no more than two sessions used each day.  Nurseries may not insist that you add extra hours, but they do not have to provide more than one session each day. Most Islington nurseries are in the scheme. They administer it through the council so you do not actually see the money but it will be deducted from bills that you may pay for more hours.
