At any election there is often interest from individuals wanting to become a candidate. While the majority of candidates at local Council, Greater London Authority, Parliamentary or European elections represent a registered political party, independent candidates can and do stand, and can be successfully elected.
The Electoral Services team produces a Guide for Candidates and Election Agents in the run-up to major elections. This will be available to download from this page or by contacting the Electoral Services team at the Town Hall.
The pages in this section provide a summary of the basic qualifications required of candidates and provide information about the different types of election. They have been prepared to give some basic advice to those thinking of becoming candidates, but they are not to be taken as a definitive or comprehensive statement of law.
Anyone thinking of becoming a candidate for any type of election should seek their own independent advice before making any significant decisions or spending any money.
Relevant information can also be found on the website of any registered political party. There is further information on the Electoral Commission website.
If you are interested in becoming a councillor then download the information at the bottom of this page. You do not have to be a member of, or represent a political party to stand for council. We are always keen to encourage local residents to become candidates. For more information either download the document at the bottom of this page or see useful websites to the right.
