Discounts
You may be eligible for a discount from your council tax bill if there is only
one adult in the household. You should receive a discount of 25% if you live
on your own. A full council tax bill is based on two adults (aged over 18)
living in a property.
For further information, click on Council Tax Reductions on the left under
Main Menu.
For certain properties some categories of people will not be counted as
adults, even if they are over 18. These include:

Full time students
-
Student nurses (project 2000), apprentices and Youth Training trainees

Patients resident in a hospital
-
People being looked after in care homes
-
The severely mentally impaired staying in certain hostels or night shelters
-
18 or 19 year olds who are at, or who have just left school
-
Careworkers on low pay who live in their place of work
-
Members of visiting forces
-
Members of religious communities
-
Those in prison (except those in prison for non-payment of council tax or a
fine)
To claim any of the above you will need to supply supporting documentary
evidence, giving the dates for the claim and contact details such as an email
address or contact telephone number. In all contact please quote your council

If your property is let and is empty and furnished between lettings you may be
eligible for a 10% reduction.
Click on the link for Housing and Council Tax Forms under Do It Online on the
right. Then select Council Tax Discount and Exemption Form from the
list of forms.
If you own a property in Islington but you live and pay full council tax at
another address outside of Islington you may be eligible for a second home
discount of 10%. To claim this discount you will need to supply a copy of your
council tax bill where you live and pay full council tax.

In all correspondence please quote your council tax account number and give a
contact telephone number and/or address.
If you know of any changes in circumstances which may affect the amount of
council tax you pay you must let us know. For example:

property left empty and unfurnished
-
property sold
-
tenancy ends

Exemptions - Unoccupied Dwellings

Structural alteration or major repair works or dwellings recently erected -
exempt for six months only

Owned by a charitable body and empty less than six months

Unfurnished and empty less than six months

Left empty by someone who is in prison or is detained
-
Was previously the sole or main residence of a hospital patient in a home
-
Waiting probate or letters of administration to be granted - exempt for up to
six months

Occupation is forbidden by law
-
Waiting to be occupied by a minister of religion
-
Previously the residence of a person who is receiving care somewhere other
than a hospital, residential care home, nursing home, mental nursing home or
hostel

Left empty to provide care to another person
-
Left empty by student(s) who are resident elsewhere during term time

An unoccupied dwelling where a mortgagee is in possession under the mortgage,
which is the responsibility of the bankrupt's trustee
-
A dwelling consisting of a pitch or a mooring which is not occupied by a
caravan or boat

Unoccupied annex to an occupied dwelling
